Davor Mucić, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist, researcher and educator based in Copenhagen, Denmark, whose work has focused for more than two decades on the use of technology to improve access, quality and equity in mental healthcare.
He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, Croatia, and completed his specialist training in psychiatry in Denmark. In 2000, he founded the Little Prince Psychiatric Centre (Behandlingscentret Den Lille Prins) in Copenhagen, alongside clinical work in psychiatric services in Denmark and Sweden.
His professional work has evolved from early telepsychiatry and e-Mental Health to the broader field of Digital Mental Health, including telepsychiatry, artificial intelligence, mHealth, implementation, culturally responsive digital care, clinical guidelines and education.
Pioneering Transcultural Telepsychiatry
A central theme throughout Davor Mucić’s work has been the use of technology to overcome geographical, linguistic and cultural barriers to psychiatric care.
In 2004–2005, he developed and implemented a transcultural telepsychiatry model in Denmark based on direct language and cultural matching between clinicians and patients.
In 2006, the model was extended across national borders through a Denmark–Sweden telepsychiatry service for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants. Patients in Denmark received psychiatric assessment and treatment by videoconference from psychiatrists in Sweden who spoke their own languages, without the routine use of interpreters.
This work represents the first documented cross-border transcultural telepsychiatry service based on direct language and cultural matching without interpreters and became an important foundation for his later research into international and cross-cultural applications of telepsychiatry.
His subsequent clinical projects have included telepsychiatric shared-care models, assessment of work ability through telepsychiatry, and participation in the implementation of telepsychiatry in the Region of Zealand in Denmark. He has also participated in Danish and European expert groups addressing digital and internet-based mental healthcare.
From e-Mental Health to Digital Mental Health
In 2011, Davor Mucić founded the Telemental Health Section of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA). In 2015, he contributed to reactivating the WPA Section on Informatics, and during the COVID-19 pandemic he initiated and coordinated the WPA e-Mental Health Expert Group.
In 2021, he served as lead author of the WPA Telepsychiatry Global Guidelines, which were subsequently comprehensively updated in 2024.
Davor Mucić served as Co-Author and Editor of the WPA Guideline on mHealth, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies (forthcoming), developed through more than two years of international collaboration led by the late Prof. Donald M. Hilty.
He currently serves as Chair of the World Psychiatric Association Digital Mental Health Section, promoting international collaboration, education and the responsible use of digital technologies in mental healthcare.
His current work increasingly focuses on the clinical and ethical implications of artificial intelligence, mHealth and other digital technologies in psychiatry, including their responsible implementation across different healthcare systems and cultural contexts.
Research and Publications
Davor Mucić has published scientific work on telepsychiatry, transcultural psychiatry, Digital Mental Health and digitally enabled models of psychiatric care.
Together with Donald M. Hilty, he co-edited the Springer book ”e-Mental Health”, published in 2016. He subsequently co-edited “Digital mental health: The future is now” , published by Springer Nature in 2025.
In 2022, he completed a PhD with doctoral research entitled “Telepsychiatry in assessment and/or treatment of refugees and migrants” at the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland).
His academic activities have also included editorial and peer-review roles for international psychiatric journals.
Education and the Future of Digital Psychiatry
Education is an increasingly important part of Davor Mucić’s work. As digital technologies become integrated into routine psychiatric practice, clinicians require competencies that extend beyond technical knowledge.
His current educational work includes the development of concepts and curricula in Digital Psychiatry for medical students, psychiatry residents and mental health professionals.

Awareness for Youth and Survivors of Harm and Abuse
An interdisciplinary initiative integrating arts, education and Digital Mental Health to raise awareness of violence against women and children and support survivors through education, public engagement and innovative psychosocial interventions.
Clinical Practice
Alongside his academic and international activities, Davor Mucić remains clinically active through Behandlingscentret Den Lille Prins in Copenhagen.
His clinical work includes psychiatric assessment and treatment, face-to-face and telepsychiatric consultations, ADHD assessment and treatment, second opinions and psychiatric specialist reports.
Collaboration, Teaching and Speaking
Davor Mucić welcomes enquiries regarding university teaching and curriculum development, research collaboration, Digital Mental Health projects, international guidelines, advisory work, invited lectures and conference presentations.
He is Editor-in-Chief on Edorium Journal of Psychiatry and Editorial Advisory Board Member of Journal of Pakistan Psychiatric Society. Dr Davor Mucić is also a reviewer for the Journal of telemedicine and Telecare and the Egyptian Journal of Psychiatry.
